Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.
The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.
Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.
Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.
The cobbled streets ascending Assisi’s hills contain most of Booking.com’s accommodation options, including luxury hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near Santa Maria degli Angeli train station.

Assisi is part of the history of not only Italy, but also of Christian Europe. Suffice it to say that Francis of Assisi, the holy monk, founder of the mendicant order named after him - the Franciscan Order - lived, served and was buried here.
The city has many architectural monuments: Municipal Square, Basilica of St. Francis, Cathedral of St. Rufino, Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, etc. The medieval narrow streets leave a fabulous impression. Excellent cuisine, local quality wines and most importantly, very helpful city residents

I loved Assisi.
I loved Assisi. A very attractive town (the old part) with clean and neat streets and houses. The Cathedral of St Francis is magnificent--a must see place. The main attractions are all within walking distance of each other. A great choice of restaurants.

We drove and it was uphill all the way on narrow roads. We had to dodge pedestrians on some of the roads. Basillica was worth seeing and if you had lodging at the top then it was an easy walk to the basillica. One night is all you need to see Assisi.

After hectic days of travel through Milan, Venice and Florence our stay in Assisi was balm for the soul. Even with the daytime crowds, wandering through centuries old streets was wonderful. Stopping in the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva we were thrilled to the beauty of the church enhanced by someone practicing the organ. The Basilicas of St. Francis and St. Clare were incredible--having read about these saints made the visits to their churches so meaningful. There is no need for a car as the city unchanged by time is easily walkable. And to top it off, great food! Lovely Assisi!

I went there on Pilgrimage as a Secular Franciscan and could have stayed forever apart from the steep hills and lack of Gluten Free, Vegan food.
You would have to travel quite a distance to find a large enough supermarket but the small local shops all sold fresh fruit and vegetables.
It's best if you can speak Italian as the English is not so good and I was mistaken for Italian a few times and was unable to respond in their language, but I tried.
BE aware that there are very few pavements/footpaths and remember that they drive on the RIGHT. It feels a little strange at first, but you soon get used to it.
Very friendly people and worth the effort to learn the language a little.
I will definitely be going back and would love to able to live there. I didn't want to leave.

We really enjoyed our trips to Spello, Assisi and...
We really enjoyed our trips to Spello, Assisi and Castiglione del Lago. Perugia was a nightmare but in general we found the area very accessible. There were no local places to eat and the list provided included places some distance away. We found several good restaurants in the San Angeli area of Assisi. The local supermarket in Pianello stocked everything and not only was good value but only 10 minutes by car! We found car hire essential.
Lieto Soggiorno is a small and cozy hotel, an amazing place to stay in Assisi. The location is excellent, with good restaurants and mini markets nearby. The owners (an Italian couple) are lovely people; the lady prepares and serves the breakfast, and everyday we tried local pastries and a good variety of breads, jams, cheeses etc. We stayed in the best room in the hotel, it's a very clean and large bedroom (with a living room and small bathroom), and the decor is very cute.
The best hotel considering the cost, facilities, location and the friendliness and accessibility of the staff.
Just a few steps from the bus stop which drives you from the train station to the city, another few meters from the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi and all the highlights of the city. The breakfast was good enough. The room and the bathroom were sparkling clean!
It exceed my expectations!
Incredibly nice and tastefully decorated, very ancient apartment with all the comforts of home. We loved it so much, that instead of staying two days, we stayed a week! Beautiful and energetic couple available for suggestions and help anytime. Our favorite stay in Italy so far!!! Perfect location for quiet (very small street) but also just a moments walk into the beauty and inspiration of Assisi!
The location was superb. Much care taken with the decor and styling... it was very tasteful. It felt newly renovated and was lovely in every way. Having a little terrace was a bonus. I highly recommend this apartment... I'd go back in a heartbeat. It is the best accommodation we've had in Italy thus far. Thank you for a beautiful place to stay
Beautiful location for a charming, clean, tidy boutique hotel at the foot of Assisi hill's.Everything was perfect, from the stylish room to the hospitality, from the nice pool in the beautiful park to the good breakfast with a view,to the romantic dinner.Simona, the owner, is an amazing host, very helpful and kind.We really, really enjoyed our stay!
The hotel was in a great location and the staff were very helpful. Parking was an issue but Assisi is a hill town, so the same would hold true for any hotel. Staff informed us of a free parking area which worked for us. Breakfasts were on time and plentiful. The view from our window overlooked the city and was wonderful.
The location was fantastic if you are looking for a quiet, yet immersive experience in Italy. The property is an old farm, with chickens and other animals close by, but still has that amenities that you would want. The restaurant on site is amazing and I can understand why people come from far away to eat there.
Standard design spacious hotel rooms with modern comfort in a historic building. Free car park with easy access and night surveillance. Excellent breakfast including local specialties. Friendly staff. Perfect location to visit Assisi and the wider Umbria region. It's also close to railway and bus station.
Our room featured a balcony with a breathtaking view that was a highlight. The room was comfortable and the hotel is located on the Main Street in Assisi so near many bars, shops etc. But it was still very quiet at night. The staff were very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend Hotel Sole.
Host welcomed us as a part of a family. Localization was very good. Breakfast was much more better than typical in Italy. Very friendly and helpful staff! It's possible to make new friends during breakfast. Room is perfect for couples.
Free parking is also an amenity booking this place.
The location was good, but Assisi is quite small anyways. The staff was friendly. The breakfast was very rich and delicious, but... they didn't have coffee. Overall a nice experience, but I wish I stayed in a better hotel when visiting this wonderful town. Even if it costs me more.
Breakfast was wonderful! They had a delightful spread of cheeses, meat, eggs, cakes and pastries. Service was super!
We had dinner on site that was the best we have had so far in Italy.
This hotel is a gem in Assisi. Literally about as close as possible as you can get to the Basilica. The people at the property were wonderful, the room was even better than we expected.
There was a wonderful non-denominational church that we attended on the same street walking distance from the hotel (CCB of Assisi). We highly recommend to visit it.
The staff were excellent. They made our stay easy and comfortable. The hotel is a short walk from Assisi centre and set in a lovely forest surround by hills.
