A Tiny Croatian Town with An Austrian Twist
Opatija is a lively and popular tourist destination which offers sandy beaches and some of the most stunning coastal views in Croatia, evident while strolling along its lovely seaside promenade Lungomare.
The town’s streets and pristine coastline are lined with bright and colourful pastel-coloured buildings, restaurants, bars, cafés and hotels.
If your plan is to go sightseeing, be sure to visit Opatija’s famous picture-postcard statue the Maiden with the Seagull, situated beside Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion. Other must-see sights are the Old City and the 14th-century Abbey of Saint James.
Neighbouring Opatija is Rijeka, Croatia’s historic and principal seaport town and a popular spot for a day trip. Rijeka’s most famous landmarks are the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral and the 13th-century Trsat Castle, which offers magnificent city and coastal views.

Underwhelmed.
Underwhelmed. When you look up Opatija you always see pictures of beautiful flowers, especially those in front of the Villa Angiolina. One of the reasons we stayed in Opatija was my wife loves flowers and especially flower gardens. The reality is vastly different from the pictures. We were there in early May 2024 and the weather was cool, but flowers tend to love cool weather. The condition of that postcard style trademark of Opatija was terrible. It is a pleasant town with a nice promenade, but when we were there most restaurants were closed and everything seemed unkempt. Half deserted and still no parking. Possibly they wait for the summer months to tend to things when the town is overrun with tourists and there is really really no place to park.

This place is so nice and beautiful.
This place is so nice and beautiful. And Lungomare walk is something incredible! I wish we had more time to explore the city or simply get lost there. Then visit the museums and admire historical villas, check out nice shops with souvenirs, spent more time just sitting and observing the sea in one of the cozy cafes at the seaside.

It’s a beautiful city with lots of Austrian style influenced buildings. I would not recommend it during the summer because for swimming in the sea it is not the best place to go to, as there are not really nice beaches. But for off season it is very nice.

Tourist Hotspot so most cafés/restaurants/bars are overpriced, often ridiculously so for the level of service. Also too crowded, even in off season. One exception: Pizzeria Roko, go eat there!

Well Opatia is an old tourist town. It does show its age and set of problems like all tourist towns. But still retains its charm and different eras that build it. A wonderful place to walk enjoy coffee on some terrace or a perfect sea food meal. The private parking is really convenient and where the studio lacated is also good for a walking distance for a grocery and restaurant. The room was beautiful and absolutely huge and we also spent some time at the pool and beach which were both quite nice. What impressed us the most was the breakfast, which was without a shadow of a doubt the best breakfast we have had at any hotel in Croatia and in fact most of Europe. Absolutely stunning!

A Lidl is super close as well. We really liked the bathtub also. A apartment is small but it was enough for us (3 girls). The sunbeds were nice as well and the reserved parking spot and also the cute cat. In conclusion it is a pretty good place to stay in Opatija, I would come back for sure.

With enough gestures we were able to and honestly, I prefer this kind of contact with locals over very touristy places where everyhting is about time and money. The location was perfect, just a few stairs down to reach the sea. Shops and restaurants are closeby for breakfast or dinner. The view from the apartment is really amazing.

Close to Opatija city center, and to a public beach as well. View is great. Jetty is close, but not disturbing at all. In Opatija (good evening walk distance) you can find shops, restaurants ship tours etc. With kids it is perfect. For a romantic weekend it works if you dont mind kids around.
