Ise
Located 500 metres from Kintetsu Iseshi Train Station, Hoshidekan Ryokan (a member of the Japanese Inn Group) is a wooden building that was built in the 1920's and provides Japanese-style rooms with... The location isn't far from the station and Ise geku. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The ryokan is so aesthetic and amazing. It made us feel like we were in the Edo period. We love that so much.
Kihokucho
Located in Kihokucho, 50 km from Ubuta Shrine, Kii no Matsushima features accommodation with a hot tub. Featuring free shuttle service, this property also provides guests with a picnic area. The Kii No Matsushima ryokan is a unique Japanese experience. The place is perfect for discovering the coast (the beach is 200 meters away) but especially if you want to do one of the many sections of Kumano path. The family who runs this ryokan were extremely attentive to every detail of our stay. The rooms are spacious and pleasant. The common areas are very clean, the bathrooms have a small onsen which is very pleasant at the end of the day! The highlight of the stay is the meals and breakfasts. The chef is a master of Japanese cuisine! Each dish transported us during the three nights we spent here, a treat! Local specialties are based on seafood and fish. We tasted many new flavors, always balanced and refined. We highly recommend this peaceful place, and hope to return.
Toba
Offering sea views, Ise-Shima Ohtaya Healing Stay is an accommodation situated in Toba, 29 km from Ise Grand Shrine and 29 km from Oharai-machi. I really like this place. The female owner has an inquisitive mind, a warm personality, and a kind heart. Her English is good enough to communicate and ask for help. The sauna and the private onsen in the room are top-notch. I did not check the public onsen with natural hot spring, but heard it's amazing too. I booked the 5th floor with an ocean view, and the private onsen experience during starry night and the set rise were indeed amazing! The hotel itself is located in a remote little cute fish town called osatsucho, where you can find fishmen and women harvesting and selling the Ise lobsters in the morning by the port. It was a very unique and interesting experience to stay in that little town for two days during the winter when it was not crowded at all. The nearest convenience store is 10 + miles away. It was a very natural, grounding, even retreat-like experience to me, and it was drastically different from my experience in Tokyo, Nayoga, or Osaka. I did spot a few demolished houses with broken windows in the town, not sure if it's because of COVID or during the winter when there were fewer tourists. The big plus is the Shinmei shrine next door to the hotel, which is a very calming and spiritual place to visit and stay for a bit too.
Toba
Hanashinsui offers outdoor and indoor hot spring baths and Japanese-style as well as Western rooms boasting magnificent mountain and ocean views. A very beautiful Japanese-style inn with an amazing view of the mountains and ocean. The onsen is an absolute delight, especiallywith the nature view. Staff is very friendly and treat you with so much respect, driving you up and down the mountain and providing a free iced drink when you go out.
Ise
Featuring public baths with views of Ise Bay and a Japanese restaurant, Oishiya is a 5-minute drive from JR Futaminoura Train Station. The traditional rooms have an attached bathroom. We LOVED the personalised service provided in traditional inns - especially by our caretaker and waitron Yasuyo Ohnishi! There can be no better location on the seashore within reach of Ise Temple Complex, located on Futiminoura Beach. They will pick you up and drop you off at the closest station and a 100m walk to the beautiful "wedded rocks (at Futamiokitama Shinto Shrine) is worth it even on a hot day! It was pouring rain when we arrived early so the driver dropped us off a beautifully restored old traditional mansion set in a tranquil zen garden to wait for reception to open at 3pm. We only realised later it's only 3 houses away from the hotel so easily accessible bonus for Oishiya's guests ! The meals (dinner and breakfast was included) was exceptional and extensive with more than 5 courses, each one beautifully arranged in trays and in stunning pottery, served by the lovely and ever helpful Yashyu Ohnishi in her immaculate kimono Dinner was attended in the Inn's provided kimono's which really added to the experience of Japanese culture we were looking for in a traditional Inn or Ryokan like this. The private Onsen (hot spring bath) was a great bonus for two shy westerners as was the slightly raised western beds in our beautiful tatami mat room with a view to the ocean and shoji screens (rather than curtains) to manage the light! It was by far the most pleasant and perfect stay in more than 30 years of travel internationally!
Ise
Conveniently located just a 2-minute walk from Iseshi Train Station, Hinode Ryokan is Japanese-style accommodation with a historic charm. Ise-jingu Shrine’s Geku (outer shrine) is a 5-minute walk... We had a great 4 night stay at Hinode Ryokan ! The staff are all lovely and friendly. We had a beautiful room in this old fashioned Inn, so conveniently located 2 minutes away from Iseshi Station. We found it easy to get around from here to all of the sites of interest for us. The baths were great and all amenities were provided. Laundry was a bonus as was the table tennis. Thank you for a great stay! I recommend this Inn for travelling to Ise !
