Alajuela is the perfect place to stay one night when entering the country and when you are departing. Its so close to the airport only $5. for a taxi. We enjoyed the local food in the market center which we stumbled upon. Even though its huge, its kinda hidden with 4 entrances on a whole block. We loved that it was just up the street a few from our stay at the Backpackers hostel.
We used Alajuela as a jumping off point for Poas Volcano so we didn't spend much time in town. There doesn't seem to be many tourist amenities. We did eat at Sr. Patacon & Dona Arepa (a Colombian restaurant) 50 meters south of the post office) which was excellent and had a great dessert selection.
Stayed at Hotel La Guadia on the first trip, Hotel Martino the second. I liked both places though they are entirely different. The town of Alajuela is pretty nice, too and I walked around it a bit.
Although we only had 1/2 a day to explore, Alajuela seemed to be a great place to walk around and enjoy some good food. I would recommend Yellow- a little coffee shop downtown...look them up on trip advisor, you won't be disappointed.
We only experienced Alajuela briefly. We enjoyed the small mall with food court where we stopped for tea and returned for dinner. Driving through downtown, it was sweet to see the Easter celebration in the community.
People were very helpful even though they spoke no English. Traffic and people went out of their way to accommodate elderly persons. Lots of busses, though it helps to know which goes where. Tried to eat at small local restaurants. Loved the Alajuela Cathedral and park in front. Didn't have much time but browsed the stores within several blocks around the hotel.
Beautiful and historic city without traffic and noise of San Jose. Near international airport but quiet and walkable. We learned our way walking around town and made lots of great discoveries in Alajuela and nearby.
Alajuela is a big city. We went to the recaté zoo where ther are literally all kinds of rescued animals and birds. We wanted to go to Volcan Poas, but the cost of a taxi was prohitive. The nearest restaurant is call Cherys and the food and service is great.
La Fortuna has a lot to offer: hot springs, horseback riding, zip lining, hiking, white water rafting, coffee tours, and much more. I usually try to find a cheaper hotel, and spend most of my money on tours and activities. Hot springs are a must. Before booking, compare prices from different sellers - for example, the day pass (with dinner) to Baldi hot springs could cost a foreigner anything between $35 and $60, and the lower prices are found at info centers in town, not at Baldi front desk! Also, there are some free hot springs and hiking possibilities. There are many nice places to eat in town, my personal favorite is Rainforest Café. Don't buy souvenirs there, they are badly overpriced! All those things can be easily found in San Jose or Alajuela downtown at half the price. Jeep-boat-jeep to Monteverde is fun. The public bus between La Fortuna and San Jose is a reliable and cheap transportation option. La Fortuna center has nice food supermarkets and drugstores, so no need to stash beforehand!
Sorry one night in Alajuela was to short but liked it more than San Jose had two weeks in CR Good experience would like to have More time
I loved everything about Garden’s House. I wish I had come a few days early to stay in this lovely little haven longer. It felt like a home away from home. Luis and Randall are experts in hospitality, and they have established a wonderfully comfortable, peaceful, and beautiful place for travelers to stay in Costa Rica. Value for price is excellent. Breakfast was delicious and the back patio was my favorite place to lounge. I would definitely come back to Garden’s House again, and I will recommend to anyone I know that plans to stay in Alajuela.
Great location in the heart of downtown Alajuela. Friendly staff, albeit slow check-in process. That said, a great spot for an overnight before or after a flight. Certainly, one of the best options in Alajuela (going on 14 years of living in Costa Rica and flying in/out of SJO regularly) that isn't absurdly priced like a $200 Holiday Inn. Included transport to the airport and breakfast are a huge bonus for this price!
Alajuela
Patricia is a lovely host - she picked me/ dropped me off at the airport, cooked delicious breakfast and was super friendly. The house is located in a quiet street, so no noise at night. Very interesting to gain a glimpse into a house of a Costa Rican family. The bed was comfy and the room absolutely clean, so I slept very well there. You can also walk by foot to Alajuela from there and discover the city.
Alajuela
We stayed for the first 2 nights of our trip and the last night before leaving Costa Rica. The hotel staff were lovely and could not have been more helpful. The hotel location is very convenient for the airport and a central place for wandering around Alajuela, finding restaurants, etc. The garden dining area was a pleasant place to relax, and the breakfast was delicious (the best Gallo pinto of our trip).
Great location for airport and for visiting the former capital of Alajuela (well worth it). Lovely small pool area and separate restaurant area with good food. Great to have an owner who cares about birds and who goes out of his way to attract birds to the sizeable garden. Regular haunt for birdwatchers on their way in or out of Costa Rica with free (morning) airport shuttle.
Wonderful, kind and very helpful staff. My husband and I especially enjoyed their balanced and complete breakfast which was included in the price. As the name indicates, the hotel was built in 1915, and had a very cozy and interesting atmosphere. It was close to the center of the city of Alajuela, and conveniently it was only 2 1/2 miles from the international airport.
Alajuela
The apartment's location is excellent, just a few meters away from shops and restaurants. You can walk from the apartment to Alajuela's downtown in just under 15 minutes and the trip from the airport is short, Damaris the caretaker was super friendly the whole time, she was always around if I needed anything. Overall it was a great experience.
Uber ride from the apartment to the airport took less than 10 minutes. Located in a quiet, safe neighborhood in walking distance to downtown Alajuela. Apartment was spacious, clean, and had a washing machine and three comfy beds. Olga was exceptionally kind and ensured that we had everything we needed and more, e.g. coffee, creamer, and snacks too!
Grecia
Away from the hustle and bustle of Alajuela in a country setting. Parking and a restaurant on site. Restaurant was decent and reasonably priced. Owner was friendly and helpful. Room was pretty large and the bed was softer than the norm in Costa Rica. All in all a good place for us to spend an extra night while waiting for our luggage to arrive.
Alajuela
Ex-hotel converted to dorms, which means every room has a bathroom. No trekking down a corridor to use a shower or bathroom. Superb location right next to the central square in Alajuela. Plenty of shops and eateries around. The best bit: free pick up from the airport. Nice! Staff were friendly and super helpful with information.
Río Segundo
immaculate, fully supplied apartment;best wifi we’ve had in Costa Rica (working on vacation) ; virtually new and very elegant; very secure gated community; washer/dryer to clean up 2 weeks of travel; central location between Alajuela and Heredia if you have a car or use Uber (Uber ride to downtown San Jose only cost us $10US)
Alajuela
This place is a little haven on the outskirts of Alajuela. Great value, great staff, kitchen, and super relaxing garden area with cute cats. We are using it as our “keep coming back to” Costa Rica base. They drive you for a reasonable rate to the airport any time of day or night. Thank you Roman, Kim and Juan Carlos :)
Alajuela
Great location in a safe/quiet neighbourhood very close to the airport. We had a spare afternoon so walk into the Alajuela town centre which has a lot of history. Breakfast was superb. Fresh fruit, eggs, toast and as much Costa Rican coffee as you like. Rooms were a good size and shower was hot and had good power.
Good location near Airport. Free shuttle Bus.Attentive staff.Clean quiet hotel. Breakfast - good. Tip - don’t go to nearest restaurants - they’re expensive and nothing special. Rather take Uber for 3-4 usd and go to better restaurant ( for example to Cevichitos Alajuela Centro - superb fresh food and reasonable prices)
The dome was so fun to stay in and the family that hosted us was so accommodating!!! They shuttled us to the poas volcano, the la Paz Waterfall, and into alajuela to our next hotel! We ordered food from them night 1 and it was delicious. All around it was a wonderful experience for us and we highly recommend it!
Alajuela
I was welcomed by the owners Carmen and Felix. They are really thoughtful and will do everything to make your stay super comfortable. It is like coming home. The apartment has everything you need. The neighbourhood is perfectly located. Close to the airport and the town of Alajuela and a big shopping mall.
Alajuela
Lovely little place just outside Alajuela. The gardens are beautiful with hummingbirds. The owners have two cute dogs. Breakfast was lovely. Unfortunately when we stayed the restaurant was closed but have heard its excellent! We only stayed one night but will return if we ever come back to Costa Rica.
Very cute hotel - just what we needed. The breakfast was delicious, the staff was friendly, and the courtyard was a great place to hang out. The hotel was centrally located in the city center of Alajuela, and a short drive from the airport. Would return when I come back to Alajuela!
Alajuela
Very nice home cooked breakfast and a great view of local life from the front porch. This place was such a great alternative to hotel/condo stays! Highly recommend if you want to be close to Alajuela and San Jose but away from the noise and traffic. 5 minutes from the airport!
Alajuela
A good value stay close to the airport in the central part of Alajuela. Staff was very nice and extremely helpful. Continental breakfast was fine. Found the hostel to be very clean. Excellent wifi and they brought a chair and desk to my room so I could work remotely.
