The guy running the hostel, Ian, was fantastic. I wanted to do the Tongariro Loop the following day, but thought I had arrived too late to plan / get myself organised for the next day, but he was super helpful which meant I saved a valuable day. Super comfy bed and bedding. Fantastic bread and heaps of brekky supplies. Great hot shower. Absolutely everything you could want in the room. Lyn and Allen were lovely, even launching a 'search party' when we were late arriving home - Allen found us safe, at the Tavern :)
Hot tub is a very attractive bonus we made good use of.

Turangi has many interesting outdoor activities, and it is in the central North Island with mountains, rivers, Lake Taupo nearby, but we were just passing through and for us it was a place to break the long journey, rather than a destination in itself.

It's a great stopover location say between Auckland and Wellington but it's hard to find good food and the prices e.g. food and petrol reflect a lack of true competition and a feeling "well, you've got little choice"

A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo.
A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo. We stayed two nights and used it as our base for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so it was perfect for that. Oreti Resort is about 14km from Turangi, so you definitely need a car for eating out etc.

We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay.
We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay. We popped up to Taupo and went to Orakei korako. Then to beautiful lake Rotopounamu and walked around that. And did the picturesque river walk. We hired a rental car so we could look around easily. We could have easily filled in a whole week.

Central to some wonderful activities such as great rafting, the walk Tongariro crossing, Ruapehu. 'Up market' accommodation is very limited but if you can get into the Tongariro Lodge, it is excellent. Worth the extra cost. The locals are helpful and the town has a nice relaxed non-touristy feel; however avoid leaving your car parked overnight on a street. Shopping, apart from Groceries is limited.

Turangi is a lovely little town.
Turangi is a lovely little town. Not much going on in the actual town itself but has everything you need in terms of supermarkets etc. and easy access to the Tongariro Crossing and lots of other beautiful walks nearby. Recommend the Tongariro River Walk and Lake Rotopounamu walk too. Lovely swimming spots! I stayed for 4 nights in the end which was great. Recommend staying here! And also use Panda Shuttles to get to the Tongariro crossing or anywhere in the local area. Stay at Riverstone Lodge if you can!
The location was great with an amazing view of the lake and just what my wife and I needed on our honeymoon. It was great as a jumping off point to visit the surrounding areas like Lake Taupo itself and Tongariro National Park as we visited various Lord of the Rings filming locations surrounding and on the volcanoes. The room was clean and very spacious, with one of the largest bathrooms in our three week's staying all across New Zealand.
Absolutely wonderful ‘holiday park’! We stayed in one of the cabins (SKI), and it was lovely! The most comfortable and ‘stylish’ place I stayed in New Zealand during my long journey. I love how they paid attention to details and actually put effort into making it extra pretty and cozy! It was spotless and spacious, with kitchen and outdoor seating. So well-maintained! It’s on the lake, which was so peaceful… would highly recommend it!
The spacious unit was lovely and clean.Everything you need in the kitchen and the oven elements and microwave worked well.Water pressure was very good. The TV was a good size with limited channels. The motel is a few minutes from Turangi
township. The little table and chairs on balcony were nice to sit in the sun to read or have a meal. There is a brunch bar and stools. The pillows were comfortable.

The location was great, very close to an excellent restaurant called the Hare and Copper, the grounds were beautiful and we really enjoyed the tennis court. The location was convenient, quiet; it is a really lovely property.
The heating system in the lodge was excellent, and it warmed up the place quickly on frisky mornings. The staff was very helpful with activities and only recommended great ones.
Turangi and TBM never disappoints. we had a great weekend out on the bikes during the day and sat down to dinner with front row seats to watch the Black Ferns. A new chef brought a fresh approach to the great dinner menu and breakfast will keep you going all day. The staff are always so welcoming and hard working. Charlie runs a great team and Val and Catherine greeted us like old friends.
Spacious and clean holiday home located about midway between Taupo and Mt Ruapehu/Tongariro. Has all the facilities you need including a great kitchen and cooking equipment. Heat pumps kept us very warm. Highly recommended for your winter ski trip or summer Tongariro hike. Hosts were very responsive and attentive as they turned on our heat pumps before our arrival.
Restaurant was exceptional, the food was delicious, even though the servings were too big to be honest, but excellent service, not enough selection of wine though, and being able to produce good cocktails would have been even better, well done !! Right on the doorstep of the motels. The view is gorgeous and every room has one.
You stay under shady trees with marvelous bird song. Pipiwhararoa (shining cuckoos) sang to me as I sat on my deck having a cup of tea. You can walk along the Tongariro River just through the back gate and watch the anglers casting for trout. This is my absolute favourite motel in New Zealand.
Peaceful location close to the Tongariro River but off the main road, but also not far from Turangi township. A traditional motel at which the unit was very clean and well-equipped. Friendly owners who are busy refurbishing. Small deck area at the back of the unit is a nice addition.
Great comfortable motel, amazing hot pools - overall a great stay. Very kind staff, they checked in on us and our one injured rider, let us use the carports for our motorcycles, and told us to dry our gear in a separate room. Will definitely stay here if we pass through again!
The location is a bit remote, but it provides a great relaxing and tranquil atmosphere.
The views from the cabin were fantastic - amazing vista of the lake Taupo from the top of the hill!
The room was spacious and comfortable.
The fact is felt like home away from home. You could close off the rooms. Having an ensuite and full kitchen. Plus a washing machine and dryer. We absolutely loved our holiday and soaking in the spa each day was a bonus.
The location is superb. The hot pools came in handy after a cold day in the ice and more importantly the children playground and the animal zoo were really a plus for a family friendly hotel.
There wasn’t a lot of choice of motels in Turangi so we were pleased to find this one. The facilities were fairly basic but adequate. The restaurant food was OK and the staff were willing.
Motel is close to Turangi shopping centre which is convenient. There are different rooms at motel to book depending on your needs and you can choose accordingly.
