Visaginas is a hidden gem city, mostly underrated and missunderstood! It has vibrant culture, street art, and an astonishing late-soviet period architechture, the city is coherent and easy to melt within, it feels almost like if you knew where you going. There are lake shores everywhere. Prices are like in Vilnius, but in summer there are several local caffeterias opened with nice lithuanian food menus.

Visaginas is a good location for those looking for unusual tourist attractions. Here you can visit a former nuclear power plant - Ignalina Power Plant - and its surroundings. This is where portions of the famous HBO tv mini-series "Chernobyl" was filmed. Also, Visaginas is super rich in nature - amazing forests anfd gorgeous lakes. Perfect for nature walks, fishing, mushrooming (mushroom picking) and berry picking.

A strongly atmospheric city with interesting architecture, surrounded by beautiful nature. There is an endless number of comfortable paths for walking and cycling in the forest, around the lakes or rivers, lots of places for chilling, having picnics or grilling, sport facilities and more than a sufficient net of smaller or bigger shops. Calm and relaxing environment with a darker background of abandoned areas after the city lost almost half of its population.

Visaginas was built as a typical Soviet academic settlement around atomic facilities, elite and inaccessible for the outsiders. After Lithuania regained its independence in the 1990s and the nearby nuclear plant was closed, the town dramatically deteriorated into a somewhat scary but impressive symbol of the collapsed empire. Today it is getting back to life due to the younger generation and some developments, offering a vacationer very good, for the region, value for money. Tiny, but urban, very quiet, with few people even in the peak season, it boasts exquisite pine forests right by the door, more than one lake, a good designated beach, with a special safe area for children, some nice eating places, canoeing, fishing and lots of reasonably basic rental apartments. The abandoned red-brick blocks of flats are still there, but for many travelers they are just another, though unconventional, attraction, along with the excursion to the closed nuclear plant.
