Ohiya is a place definitely worth to go.
Ohiya is a place definitely worth to go. Horton Plains are absolutely gorgeous, but even the unusual forests around Ohiya, birds, other animals and all the plants (especially flowers and coniferous species) are worth to see. We loved the mysterious weather, hot mornings, misty afternoons or evenings, and beautiful nights with distant thunderstorms. This place is fabulous and we wish to come back again.
Best restaurant for us was staying at Muthu Nisindi in Forest Cyniciam Holiday Bungalow. And her husband Mahinda took care of us with his tuk-tuk, being always on time, always prepared to stop to show us an an animal or answer question or wish.
We definitely recommend animal watching around the village, walks in forest, eating all the food you can and going to Horton Plains at least for two days to hike through all the paths available, we managed to do just 2 hikes and will come back once to see the rest.

Ohiya is the nearest town to Horton Planes and Worlds End,...
Ohiya is the nearest town to Horton Planes and Worlds End, UNESCO World Heritage site. Horton Planes is home to 20/27 endangered bird species. Hike is approximately 9km loop. One can visit many other natural wonders from Ohiya including Bambara Kanda, Iddamalgasdeniya Railway Station. There are 14 railway tunnels between Ohiya and Iddamalhasdeniya railway stations. Other attractions include several watrefalls.
This stay is very rustic, in a good kind of way. The host where very simple people, always kind and smiling. They prepared us tea all the time because it is very cold in Ohiya and it was great. We came late because we had problems with transfer, but they still prepared us a full and tasty dinner. We arranged transfer to Horton's Plains through the hosts and they prepared us breakfast for our morning ride. There was hot water but no heating. This is a great place to stay, just don't forget to bring warm clothing.
Very nice guesthouse to stay in Ohiya. It's located close to Horton Plains National Park.Transport to the park can be arranged by the guesthouse. Large rooms with bathrooms and common garden. The staff is veeeeery friendly and if you need to solve any issue, it is solved quickly. Very friendly boss, always ready to help. The food served in the guesthouse is amazing, one of the best we tried in Sri Lanka. If you order the dinner be prepared for huge portions! Perfect place to stay near Horton Plains!!
We spend one night in Ohiya Jungle to go to the Horton Plains. The family Organized a transport to the Horton Plains the next day. There you can see a beautiful sunset, some wild animals. We went to the worlds end, which is a half day tour. If there is more to do here, we did not know.
The place is comfortable with fireplace and sitting area. The food was delicious as well.
As a plus, we could cancel the 2nd night of our reservation and we hope this did not cause too much trouble.
Prakash and other staff members were very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. They took care of us very well. What is even more impressive was the food made by Chef Prakash. We are originally from Sri Lanka, and we have had plenty of Sri Lankan food, including home cooked food. But the Rice and curries dinner we had here was unique and the best we ever had. We had a great mountain view from the room and balcony, and were able to enjoy the Sunrise directly from the room.
Mahinda and his awesome family warmly welcomed us and we felt like home. The food was a dream and probably the best we had in Sri Lanka. The location of the home stay is idyllic and quiet, so you can really relax! They also organized a tuk-tuk driver for us. I would highly recommend the accommodation and hope that I can return for a longer stay at this wonderful place!
most romantic place during our trip! if you have the time and courage DO NOT MISS this place. you will understand in the morning. little bit difficult to get there but not impossible. we got there by car, durign a nasty rain, so the car did not make the last 750 meters, we had to walk, getting soaked. in the morning we went down to ohiya on foot,it was a nice walk.
The staff was super helpful. Whatever I asked them was arranged. I got the balcony room and the views were amazing! Watching the sunrise was the highlight of my stay here. It's also just a few steps away from the railway station, so it was easy for me to catch my next train as well.
Also, it's the ideal place to stay if you plan to visit Hortons.
Really great staff and owners. Stylish terrace and rooms, very spacious and clean. Everything is new and clean and feels very comfortable. The food was really nice and I was always offered tea and bottled water. Best location to do trips around, especially Horton Plains National Park. I would highly recommend this hotel and definitely come back!
The family was very warm and welcoming.
The room is part of the home, making for an intimate experience.
The home had a nice view of the surrounding area and the dinner and breakfast was tasty Sri Lankan cuisine. The family also gave us a recommendation for a local walk which we really enjoyed.
Thanks for having us!
A good memory from the Ohiya. Even though it was raining both days of our stay and we could not visit the hiking trails in this area, the unique view of the hotel and kind staff made us have a good time.
And there is good point for this hotel; it's near to train station
The location is 300mtrs from the Ohiya railway station. The building is old but clean. The beds were exceptionally comfy. The guesthouse keeper Chanaka is very friendly and was very helpful. Also he's a fantastic cook. 100% value for money.
Almost everything. Location was close to Horton Plains and the owners arranged a tuk tuk ride for a nominal fee. Lovely surrounding. Food was tasty and ample given. Really worth it. Owners were friendly and made the guests feel at home.
Dinner was excellent. One of the best we had in Sri Lanka. same for breakfast, the hoppers were delightful. The hosts were accomodating and made tea for us upon arrival on request.
One of the rooms we had had an exceptional view
The people who run this place are very friendly, and the old lady cooks very nice curry, and very cheaply too. If you are a group, having the bungalow with three bedrooms and a small living room to yourself is very nice.
When I ask before putting the booking that can we reach the hotel by a car they said yes
But actually you can reach the hotel 2KM before the hotel
The walk path is also very bad
So i didn’t go
