I really liked Otaru, even though it is small and doesn’t have too much to see. It’s really just the main shopping strip and the canal. There are a few museums and some spots in the mountains (there seems to be a ropeway that is poorly advertised but would have been perfect) but that’s about it.
It’s really quite a charming place. The streetscape and history are both fascinating, and the food great - especially ankake yakisoba and kaisendon. I do think it would be an absolutely perfect place to end a trip and unwind for a few days before returning to reality.

A lovely old port town with many original buildings being repurposed for tourism - dining and glass making.
Compact size makes walking around easy but in winter could be snow bound.
Lots of great places to explore old Japanese culture and dining and drinking experiences.
Lots of fresh seafood...many diners around the actual fish market shop with all types of Japanese cuisine... tempura...sakitori...sushi..shashimi...hotpot ...ramen etc..and absolutely amazing bakeries / patisseries and local ice cream and dairy products. Even wineries have opened up.
And even more if you are a winter sports person with ski resorts on the town outskirts...seaon just closed when we were here.
All this a simple train ride from Sapporo Airport -- ok maybe an 2 hour ride...not bad if straight off the plane from Sydney or Seoul or Tokyo into the Sapporo airport.

After coming from the big city of Sapporo we loved the smaller town of Otaru. Planned on just doing a day trip but changed to stay overnight. Wish we had taken a day off Sapporo and added it to Otaru. No lights on the canal as expected but we still loved Otaru. Easy to walk to everything and a lot to enjoy.

We went during winter.
We went during winter. It is a small quiet town and most shops close around 5-6pm. So good to settle dinner early. As a small and quiet town, the place is generally quiet and peaceful after dusk. There is nothing to do after dusk and travelers can take a stroll down the Otaru canal and enjoy the night view.

Give the canal a pass, especially if you have been to Europe. Very underwhelming. Take the local train one stop to Shioya and hike the Shioya Maru-yama. It is about a 6km round trip hike up a local mountain with great views. Take the same train to Yoichi to tour the Nikka Whiskey Distillery and sample great whiskeys in the restaurant after the tour (book reservation for tour ahead of time and remember everything shuts down around 16:00).

The hotel: Great location, staff service facilities and everything you need to support your comfortable stay, a little cosy but expected in the country.
The town is lovely and has now become my most favourite town in Japan, want to be here more, it give me relax, local people are also very nice.
The hotel is about 13 minutes walk from the Otaru station, not too far. The price is affordable and not expensive. The room and beds are really comfortable. The staffs are very friendly, helpful, supportive. They allowed me to self check in late at midnight with very detailed instructions and also support me my inquiries a lot! The hotel is not far from Otaru canal. Thanks so much for trying to answer many questions from me!. Would recommend to stay.
NIcely renovated hotel with an english vibe to it. Staff were friendly.
We booked the loft room for family of 4 and it could easily sleep 6. There is apple TV with projector in the room and we could mirror it with our ipad.
Room is comfortable and feels newly renovated. There is a family mart across the street and it is also within walking distance to Otaru canal and Sakaimachi Dori.
Very friendly staff. It is best if you can speak Japanese. Staff can communicate in basic English and they really try their best! Clean and well-maintained. Pleasantly quiet for a hostel. Location is in a residential area, you definitely get to see a different side of Otaru. Free parking approximately 5 min walk from the hostel. Fantastic value for money.
Love the experience of the self check in but careful with the name used for booking because I forgot and it took me a while at the machine. Every thing is self serve and I love the feeling of privacy this way. I love thé hôtel-hostel vibe because I’m travelling with my wife but we wanted a bit of hostel feel without sharing a room with others.
The hotel is close to the river, so you can see the river view from the window directly. Also, It is a historical hotel, because it has old but elegant decorations. The staff there are friendly and professional, they could speak English very clearly and easily to communicate with. In addition, we are lucky that we get the room upgrade.
The room was great, very large ., lovely view from the room. Linen changed daily, a novelty in this day. Breakfast great variety of options, to suit most cultural tastes.the hotel 5 2 stops fromOtaro but trains every 15mins. And cost about $2.50 each way. Wasn't a problem for me.
We really enjoyed the in-room onsen — the main reason we chose this hotel. Even though the view from the onsen was partially obstructed (stated upfront), it was still pretty lovely. Room was comfortable and spacious enough for our family of 3.
The onsen here is awesome! Huge space, with several baths, for you to enjoy. They also provide some free snacks for the customers after they take the onsen! The location was really nice, just across the main station in Otaru.
The place is in the centre of Otaru, near canal and 8 min from the station. In the house there all you need to use, kitchen, bath , tv and washing machine. The host is very kind and helpful. Thank you and I will came back .
My 2nd stay here, the price is reasonable and the hotel is accessible and convenience. The only thing i like to add that one of the room lighting is a little dim compare to the other 3 rooms.
Room is great and has a private onsen facing the sea and mountains..great view. The hotel is up on hilltop and many car parking lots which is very convenient.
