Incredible experience from start to finish. I only stayed one night, but I felt immediately at home and could not have been happier. The private, in-room onsen was the highlight of the room without question. Such a wonderful way to unwind and I spent hours in there. They keep the onsen very hot, hotter than most I've been to, but it's easy to add cold water to cool it down and if you go too far, a call to the front desk will have hot water piping back in. I enjoyed soaking while watching the snow fall through the open window - and was very comfortable!
The room was extremely spacious with sliding partitions for each area, so if traveling with a partner or family, it would be easy to create privacy when needed. In-room amenities were great. Nice lotions, soaps, etc. Lighting in the room was very nice - I believe about 6 different settings you can choose from to create the mood you're looking for.
The meals were absolutely top notch and unforgettable, both the dinner and breakfast. I can't say enough good things but the food surpassed all my expectations. Simply lovely.
Checking in and out was very smooth and simple. It was easy to catch a taxi from directly outside Tobu Nikko station and when it was time to leave, the staff called a taxi for me.

Great location in Nikko. Nice facilities and very friendly staff. The bar was cool with a knowledgable bartender. The room was also very large compared to most of the hotels I stayed in whilst in Japan.

We visited quite a few places during our two week stay in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto and then we took a two day bike ride from Imabari to Onomichi). Nikko was the most beautiful of the beautiful places we visited. Took a bus ride up the hill and hiked in the forest which boasts two types of bear, deer and monkeys. The temple was beautiful and we enjoyed trying local food. We each had a "Yuba set" at a local restaurant.

The rooms were freezing cold no heating and it was -5 inside the hotel. They provided us with one thin blanket nothing like advertised, the windows were open and unable to close. We are having to seek medical help as one of my friends has developed hypothermia. No food no drink and the toilet facility does not flush.
Said in advert the beds would be made up for us. After a vicious scolding by the owners wife we had to awkwardly make up our own beds with no instructions at all.
If you like being shouted at, sleeping on a solid cold floor with a stone for a pillow this is definitely the place for you.
Didn't really wanna even give the one star but no choice for 0*.

Nikko is a lovely small place. The local Chinese on the high street has amazing food, it has a very small door and would be easy to miss, but make the effort to find it.
The temples are amazing, but I loved the mountains, if you like trekking then you will love Nikko.

Fabulous place to visit with the right balance between nature walks and temple and shrine visits. Our favorite visits were Toshogu and Rinno-ji Temples, a day trip to Chuzenji Lake and Kegon Falls with a walk towards the Italian and English Embassy residences was beautiful. If you still have time, the Imperial Tomozawa Villa is worth spending a couple of hours at. We did everything by bus and it was very well organised. Train station has convenient coin lockers for luggage and a Yamato counter to deliver your luggage at your hotel so you can start visiting without being troubled.

i loved the variety of hiking trails - there was no shortage of beautiful nature. there are populated trails and quieter trails, and the bus service was very convenient once i got the hang of it. while the shrines were pretty enough, i preferred the rinnoji shrine gardens and would have preferred to spend more time hiking instead of fighting with the crowds at toshugu shrine. senjogahara was stunning and i would have liked to spend more time at the yumoto and kirifuri trails.
october was a little early for autumn leaves, so maybe i will return later in the year next time. that said, it was a pity i just missed the shrine festival this year!

While there is the Nikko bus, it is better for a group of 4 to rent a car from Nippon rent-a-car.

Akebi onsen is awesomein a beautiful forest garden.
Kegon waterfall and lake Chuzenji is breathtaking. There are hotels up there but be prepared for colder weather. Ice forms at night.
Weather is an important factor. Might get foggy or even rain. But beautiful skies when clear.
Cross the different bridges and hike up the hills along the river.
Very good location, just outside Nikko Toshogu site. The onsen was nice and I had it to myself as I was one of two sets of guests that weren't the middle school boys plus teachers on a field trip. I have no issues with sharing space with school trips--,they were well behaved kids for the most part. My room was large for one person and I had my own toilet. The staff were very nice to me, the only foreigner in the hotel that day. They kept my bags for me and put them in my room when I came back later in the afternoon.
This place is immaculately clean. Never have I seen such a clean hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are large and comfortable. The bedding is on the floor and might be a little thin for some, but we managed to sleep well here. They provide lovely robe and toiletry sets for use when using their onsen facilities. The shampoo bar in the women’s onsen is fantastic. Location is great, step outside and you’re 1 min from the Shinkyo Bridge. I would definitely stay here if in Nikko again.
For our trip to Nikko, we could not have asked for a better stay in a traditional Japanese home, with a better host. He has been the most amazing host. He speaks English very well. We traveled during winter. So, he made plans for our 3 -day trip accordingly. He was kind enough to pick us up from the station. He has such a jolly personality, interacting with him, will make one's experience richer. We are definitely going back to Nikko in a different season, and we plan to stay at this place again!
the rate is very good compared to other properties at Nikko, which is a very expensive location when it comes to accommodations. the room is large and clean, kitchen utensils are all available on site. stuff replies very fast when you have questions and can speak in both Japanese and English. the surrounding area is very quiet and beautiful in the morning. and it is also a very safe neighborhood. Nikko is also very very beautiful, loved it and will come back.
Very glad to have stayed here for 2 nights though without meals. All sold out and Nikko is very busy destination. This ryokan hotel is near to all the must go places . And the onsen is great after a long day out. Staff very friendly & helpful. Piano at lounge in the evening is a relaxing place to hang out . Behind the hotel there is route to kanmangafuji abyss along Daiya river and a little tea house facing the river.
Simple dinner options 2-5 min walk away .
Breakfast and dinner buffet was bigger than I expected! Various things you can choose from.
All three Onsen were very clean! The one on top of the Hotel was awesome at night! Enjoying a hot bath while whatching the stars is something one is not doing every day.
Staff were very friendly and will give their best to help you.
They also have shuttle buses from/to the Hotel
e.g. Utsunomia Station, various attractions nearby and to Nikko!
The hotel in our opinion is the gateway to Nikko. While the hotel premises have aged, the hotel remains clean, functional and comfortable topped with great service. The proximity to a coin laundry, supermarket and several highly rated restaurants makes the hotel something to return to for our future visits to Nikko.
We checked in on White Day and received a box of chocolates. A nice touch that puts a smile on our faces.
The Onsen was great, clean and quiet! Very close to shoyoen garden and located not that far from Nikko station and Tubo station. Staff are very helpful and communicative over booking chat mostly for us, came picked us in the rain with a lovely smile. Yukata (a special Japanese suit)
Is in very high quality and felt really good.
To sum up-we were too old for that kind of experience.
This was the best hotel I stayed in on my 3-week trip to Japan. Beautiful location for Ukonikko. The onsen was great and every evening there was free sake and snacks. The communal room was excellent. The room was basic but clean and comfortable. The breakfast on both mornings was fantastic! Highly recommended!
This place exceeded our expectations. We tried teo different rooms and both were traditional, cosy, and memorable. The staff, the dinner, the breakfast, and the nature will remain the highlights of Japan trip. Arriving at the location was an adventure that made the hotel all the memorable.
Great simple Hotel for an overnight stay at Nikko. 5min walk from the train station and convince store. Lots of good restaurants within walking distance. Free simple breakfast and staff was super friendly and helpful. Onsen of the classic Station Hotel can be used which was excellent.
Very close to Tobu Nikko station;
Room is very big as compared to model budget hotel;
Personally I like the 70s style of the hotel;
The hotel is managed by an old couple (I guess they are couple) who don't speak much English but they will try their best to help
Perfect view from the balcony towards the Lake Chuzenji. Nice location in Oku Nikko area. Well prepared dinner, especially the third day is a surprise. Hot spring in hotel. And very polite service staffs. I with my family will come back again.
The onsen on the verandah of the room was amazing at the end of a long day of walking. The hotel is a little unusual, by western standards, but the staff are great, the room comfortable and Nikko is amazing in autumn colours.
The onsen and the dinner are definitely the highlights. The hotel is also very well located, next to the main shrines. A great way to experience the best Nikko has to offer for one night!
Very confortable hotel - 25 mn from Nikko shrines but well worth the distance. Food is very good. Great onsen. Staff was very nice, despite not so good english.
I love the style of hotel Japanese vintage. They concerns the things we requested that I appreciate. I didn’t eat beef they rearranged the meal without beef.
