I LOVE the Hotel Laxa. It has such a cool laid back vibe and is in the perfect location on the banks of Lake Myvatn. The rooms are cosy and modern, the breakfast is good, the staff are friendly. I can’t praise it enough. We even got to see the Northern Lights from the car park🇮🇸💚

The drive over through the mountains (if you decide not to take the toll road via Akureyri) is already a treat before you arrive at a unique location in a natural park located in the northern part of Iceland. Our bedroom had an en suite bathroom, and was clean. Waking up to see a fresh (thin) layer of snow covered the outside area was a big bonus. The common space has enough room to not bump into the occupants of the other rooms, and the kitchen is well stocked.
Fly to Akureyri Airport from Reykjavik (45-minute flight), then drive to Myvatn (90km, about 1 hour). International travellers can fly to Keflavik Airport, transfer to Reykjavik (50km, about 45 minutes), then follow the domestic route.
The most convenient airport for both domestic and international travellers is Akureyri Airport, due to its proximity and regular flights. It's approximately 100km from Myvatn, a journey of around 1 hour and 15 minutes by car.
Myvatn, Iceland, lacks public transport. The best options are hiring a car or cycling. Car rental services are available in nearby Akureyri and Reykjahlíð. Cycling is feasible during summer months, with bike rentals available locally. Walking is also an option, but distances between attractions can be considerable. Always check local weather conditions before setting out.
Reykjahlíð is the best area to stay in Mývatn, Iceland. It's conveniently located near the lake, natural baths, and volcanic features. It offers a variety of accommodations, dining options, and is a hub for local tours.
Myvatn, Iceland experiences a subarctic climate with cold, snowy winters and cool, short summers. Average temperatures range from -10°C in winter (December to February) to 12°C in summer (June to August). There's no distinct dry or wet season, but precipitation is relatively low, with the wettest month being October. The region is not prone to monsoons or hurricanes.

It's a beautiful lava field and lake system.
It's a beautiful lava field and lake system. Old volcanos and lava flows. Dimmuborgir is a legendary place where the Yule Lads sleep through the summer. Bear in mind that the summer can have hatches of midges.
Krafla Power Station, active geothermal mud pools, Mývatn Nature Baths.
If you travel in the winter it's a great place to see the Aurora as practically no light pollution.
Obviously it's not as nice as Akureyri, but I would say that as I live there

Myvatn Lake certainly has beautiful scenery and the weather is typically warmer than the coast. For the full service/hotel travelers I would recommend Fosshotel. For campers there is plenty of accommodations.

So much to see and do in this area!
So much to see and do in this area! Thankfully we were up and out just after nine! We packed in so much! Lots to see down the eastern side of the lake. Each activity offered us something different and unusual that we hadn’t experienced before. The thermal baths there, although smaller than the Blue Lagoon, are much cheaper and actually offer senior rates. Two pools, one warmer than the other and one sort of large hot tub area. Well worth the money! The cakes in the restaurant there and the coffee were some of the best we’ve had and are reasonably priced. They also have larger meals and soups on offer.

Myvatn is a beautiful lake, and the surroundings have plenty to offer to visit and for hiking. It has a great variety of scenic points and shorter and longer walks. At Skutustadir is a nice information centre that also a small exhibition explaining the origin of the circle of craters over there.

Although it was a long drive from the west of Iceland, it was well worth it. There are so many hidden gems: 2 grottos, a fissure off the beaten path, a nature bath that rivals blue lagoon, and so much more. It's also not crowded due to the location. Well worth the drive!
Comfortable, well equipped lodge with 4 guest rooms and communal kitchen, dining, living area. Host helpful and provides good range of food to make your own breakfast. Very nice, well equipped kitchen, including washer / dryer which was very useful, and well used by guests whilst we were there. Good location not far from main road and very close to Lake Myvatn and its attractions. Supermarket not far away in Reykjahlio where there is also very good fish and chip take away.
An excellent place to stay next to Lake Myvatn. Located close to Hverir geothermal area and Myvatn Nature Baths (well worth a visit). The restaurant here is superb and the buffet breakfast the best we had in Iceland with meats and cheeses etc. from the farm (there is a very strong farm to plate ethic going on here). The room itself was well sized but cozy and warm (it was minus 13 in the morning so this was important!). Plus you can go and pet the cows and calves!
The location is beautiful. The place is family owned and on a farm. On one side of the hotel are rolling hills with horses and on the other Lake Myvtn with a lovely walk around pseudo craters across the street from the guesthouse. There is also a delicious ice cream shop made with the farm’s dairy products. The breakfast was top notch. Almost everything was made in house on the farm (milk, bread, smoked trout, pate). So delicious! Very quiet location.
The campground hosts were very helpful in providing information. The huts are close to a supermarket/gas station and Myvatn lake seems like a vacation spot for the locals. I really liked having a porch to sit on at the end of the day. We used the kitchen of the hostel down the road. The campground bathrooms and showers were kept clean and were walking distance from the huts.
They do have "jet toilets", which is a bit weird at first.
The hotel itself is very clean and nice. The hot tub at the back is cozy for a hot bath after a day out in the snow. The restaurant is absolutely delicious, but a bit pricy.
Near the hotel is the myvatn bath which is also recommended.
The breakfast room location with a view of Lake Myvatn was fantastic. The breakfast offerings, including several local products, was very nice, though the only hot option was self-made waffles. The front deck on the cabins was a nice touch, The best part was the staff -- very warm and friendly.
Hotel is in a beautiful location with a great view of Lake Myvatn although it was frozen over during my stay. The large windows in the bedrooms and throughout the property take full advantage of the beautiful Icelandic landscape.
Breakfast is simple but has everything you need.
Great location for sightseeing with beautiful views of Lake Myvatn and surrounding volcanoes. Very comfortable and clean. Staff was very helpful. Public spaces were nice and the food was great. Breakfast buffet was delicious with wonderful bread.
Location and views on the lake and view of Northern Lights. located at the best section of lake Myvatn.
The houses have their own kitchen and at the main block there is a proper bbq. Homemade Jam and smoked trout at breakfast were outstanding
Superb hotel. Go for it if you are looking for a stay in Myvatn area. Great rooms and fantastic staff. Opt for dinner. We enjoyed dinner as well as breakfast next morning. We also spotted Aurora from this stay.
Small room in a cottage, clean and pleasantly warm, no breakfast, helpful staff, quiet place, near Lake Myvatn and Myvatn Nature Bath (like Blue Lagoon but not to much people) and not far from Dettifos,
The location is very good, close to the lake. The owner of the property is a very nice person. had a nice and informative talk after dinner. This hotel is more a family house with a pleasant atmosphere.
Hotel location perfect for hiking nearby trails. Great views. Breakfast was amazing and perfect for days we hiked. Room spacious for three adults. Clean and comfprtable. Breakfast the BEST!!!
beautiful modern new building. we got a corner room with view of the lake which was lovely. about 10 minutes to all the lake myvatn sights we wanted to see, location amazing
This is a luxury hotel. The location is out on a point all by itself. It has a postcard view from all sides. The restaurant is some of the best fine dining I have had.
