The largest city of Xishuangbanna, Jinhong is a curious mix of ethnic flavours. Feels more like Laos or Vietnam than China, while having all the usual Chinese conveniences like seamless contactless payments, inexpensive Didi ride-hailing, low crime rate, etc. Not the first place you probably should visit in China, but definitely worth a short stay if you're into nature (lush jungle, sparrow-sized butterflies, wild elephants if you're lucky, etc), local foods, ethnic things, and of course tea. The city is being heavily invested into (at the time of writing, Nov 2019), which means after 2-3 years there might be many, many more Chinese tourists here - so take your chance while it's still relatively calm :)
