Most travelers skip Haiphong. This is a mistake. If you travel to eat, don’t skip Haiphong. The food is interesting, delicious, varied and exceptional. We had the best Pho here that we’ve had in four trips to Vietnam. The people of Haiphong are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The city center has a lovely park running through it. The old colonial architecture is rundown in places but interesting to look at. We stayed out of the old city in a modern development, but would stay in the center next time even though GRAB and the city bus are easy to use.

Food was great in Hai Phong. With a wide variety catering to other nationality. Seafood is still the freshest in Hai Phong but it is not my cup of tea. Hai Phong is more famous for it ship building and metal industries. So metal parts are normally cheaper in Hai Phong.

Not what you would really call a tourist destination though there are a few places nearby such as the Opera House, Pagoda and near to Halong bay (45 km.

Far too busy and not much to see. If you have been to Saigon or Hanoi don’t bother unless catching bus or boat to Cat Ba. Stay close to pier and bus station which are close to getther and walk to either. Simply a stop over.

Hai Phong has virtually no tourist infrastructure and it very difficult to figure the place out. A lot of Internet references lead you to places that don't exist at the address mentioned. Finding food was challenging. No one speaks English. There really isn't a lot to look at anyway. Colonial quarter is nice sort of but there are better examples in Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh city to name a few. We found one brilliant restaurant. Best we found in Vietnam by a long way. It was called Nam Giao (22 Le Dai Hanh st). Go there if you are in town. You'll be blown away. Great beers on tap as well.
