Amazing location 20’ by foot from the train station and Coop (they pick you up by car and drive you to the hotel for free if you ask them), literally IN the forest with beautiful hiking trails starting from the hotel. Very quiet, beautiful, and wild - with the quality of a 4 star hotel.

We went in late summer and walked in a different part of the surrounding mountains every day. Good cable car access to or from higher areas but also options to walk to the mountains/lakes from Kandersteg. Local buses and trains are free with the area guest pass and there is 20% off cable car fares. Several restaurants to choose from for meals and coop etc to buy picnic. Beautiful village. Only 2 hour train journey from Basel. Kandersteg tourist office website has info on many local walks with interactive maps.

At the altitude of Kandersteg, wildflowers are at their peak in early to mid June. The place is suitable for children (the Rodelbahn), the more accomplished climbers (the Via Ferrata), and everyone in between. It's a gateway to beautiful places for hikers of various abilities, e.g. the Gasterntal, the Allmenalp, the Gemmi Pass, the Oeschinnensee, the various alpine huts. Perhaps that's why the International Scouts Centre is situated in Kandersteg. Everything within the village is within a 10-minute walk. Kandersteg is a clean and beautiful town near alpine hikes, ski areas with activities in summer, bicycling, and many other outdoor activities, all with spectacular scenery. We used Kandersteg as a place to rest with a day-hike between longer hikes in the SAC huts above tree-line, which require a lot more strenuous hiking to reach. The views are spectacular and a cable car carries you up far above the city with spectacular views of the city and a beautiful glacier melt lake after a short hike. Most services are available in town including groceries, pharmacy, numerous restaurants, and hotels in a variety of price ranges.
